On February 28, 2013, 37-year-old Jeffrey “Jeff” Bush was in his bedroom in Seffner, Florida, when a sinkhole opened beneath his home, taking him and his bed underground.

His brother, Jeremy, jumped into the hole to search for him but had to be rescued as the ground continued collapsing.

Rescuers later abandoned the search because the site was too dangerous. Jeff’s body was never recovered.

The house was demolished because of the danger, and the surrounding area was assessed for further ground instability.

In August 2015, another sinkhole opened at the same location. The cause of the original collapse was never definitively established.
