A few thoughts after a long night. First, I think there's a strong case that Iran's reprisal was a strategic error. For months Israel was increasingly isolated, America looked feckless and Iran was projecting power through proxies whilst preserving detente with Arab states. 🧵
@gulluboy10 @omarali50@gaurav_lele No he did not. He wanted to ally with the US as he was essentially a social democrat. He supported national insurance for all, land and labour reforms for equity and most importantly social reforms to make the overall society more productive
@PakTYT@gaurav_lele@omarali50 I agree, but conditions were still not right as US also was not interested much after the detente with China. India could not dump USSR after the war and China still threatening the borders. The leadership that time had so very few choices
@gaurav_lele@omarali50 Backward class politics started in the 60s itself as the wealth was concentrated with the upper class even then. The economy should have expanded massively after that to avoid conflicts over resource allocation which was simply not possible with India's size, social conditions
Almost every aspect of the Indian economic narrative/story/opportunity is a wrapper on abundant affordable manpower. And yet I sense discomfort when it comes to acknowledging this. 1/n

“The 1974 Indo-Sri Lankan Agreement is binding under the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, 1969 (VCLT).
The bilateral treaty with Sri Lanka does not have provisions for either withdrawal or termination. Under Article 56 of the VCLT, it stands then that India cannot unilaterally rescind the treaty. In order to withdraw from the treaty, India is required to notify Sri Lanka and acquire the latter’s consent to the same under Article 65 (1). If Sri Lanka’s consent is not forthcoming, the two countries will have to seek recourse under Article 33 of the UN Charter.[xxiv]In such a situation a peaceful settlement may be sought through resorting to arbitration or involving a third party.[xxv]However, Sri Lanka has opposed any disruption to the status quo with regards to the maritime boundary with India. Therefore, third-party intervention may threaten Indo-Sri Lankan relations and runs contrary to India’s current “Neighbourhood First” policy. The abrogation of the bilateral treaty by India, as Tamil Nadu demands, will ensure the country loses face in the realm of international politics at a time when it is staking its claim as a rising power.”

Anecdote: During my posting as Consul General in Herat Afghanistan, getting an abusive/threatening call around midnight from someone posing as #Afghan was a routine. Once when I was in deep sleep I received a call. Before his saying anything, I started abusing the caller in chaste Lahori Punjabi and fell asleep 🛌 again. No call received thereafter 😀
Egypt is kind of screwed.
50 years ago, it had a population of 38 million people, today this has ballooned by 300% to 114 million with an average age of just 24y.
The country is at risk of plunging into chaos, causing millions to flee across the Mediterranean.
A short thread.
