Way to go tonight @CerroVillaOUSD band! @willgearhart let his students choose a guest conductor for one of the songs tonight and they all chose the Cerro Villa custodian, John. I love that! You’re an all-star, John!
Beg. Strings: Sizing students: Violin/viola: scroll at end of wrist. Cellos: sizing stick; the problem is often stretching the left hand. Error on the small side. #scsboa2018
Rhythm: Function vs lyricism. Pocket vs Melody. Call and response: Rhythm section interacts with soloist. Texture changes: different voicings, density, octaves, stop time, etc. Pianists simplicity can be good: 3rd and 7th only. #scsboa
Rhythm: Open feel/ECM - could be swing (loose two feel) or straight 8ths (loose samba). For advanced players. Much more free with accents and pulse. #scsboa
Rhythm: Problem: 2 comping instruments, piano and guitar. Solution 1: 1 at a time. S2: 1 becomes more rhythmic ie. quarter notes while other comps. S3: Both comp at the same time and listen to each other too work together.
Conducting: Keep good tension: so that students are on the edge of their seats. Keep them engaged! Tension creates dialogue. In music it ebbs and flows with melodies, harmony, structure. #SCSBOA
