My view is that there is a fundamental confusion within government and UKRI about the relationship between scientific research, Universities and growth. A strong science base and strong Universities are necessary for growth, but they are not levers you can pull to generate it, at least over the typical lifetime of a parliament. Science is the curiosity led exploration of Nature. It delivered the modern world, but it was not invented to do that. If you try to conflate all these things together you’ll get neither economic growth nor transformative scientific progress, and you run a serious risk of destroying the Universities and the science base upon which future growth depends.
Not enough people remember this. Infantino hand selected Inter Miami to participate in the Club World Cup. Not the MLS champions, but Inter Miami.
They’re the only team that didn’t have to qualify
@BBCNews It certainly was weird. Egypt's goal disallowed for a foul that was so far back it was almost in Egypt! And Argentina's goal waved through when similar thing happened. Then Infantino visibly celebrating Argentina's 'victory'. Sleazy stuff.
Is that the reason? Or is the main reason you pay post-docs and PhD students a maximum of £20,000 to live in one of the most expensive areas in the planet when they could instead earn three times that in the US.
Friendship and romance really need to switch places in terms of how much Western cultures typically value them, because you can live a full life just fine while single but you CANNOT live a full life without friends.
i accidentally discovered one of the coolest features on the internet
the Wikipedia app has a "nearby" feature that shows wikipedia articles around your location!
i opened it and instantly fell into a rabbit hole of random places, local history and weird things around me
try it and tell me what shows up near you
There are people who think doing a PhD is about executing a research question well instead of coming up with a research question that is worth being answered.
There might not be anyone going for 25 Slams again, and there might not be any man going for the Career Slam at age 22 again.
Still cannot believe those two outcomes are intertwined.
The more I think about it… this is arguably the highest-stakes men’s tennis match of all time?
On Sunday:
Novak Djokovic wins a 25th Grand Slam title
Or
Carlos Alcaraz becomes the youngest ever player to complete the Career Slam in men’s singles
HISTORY on the line.
The ‘I’m voting Stephen’ play to get a 2-1-1 Faraaz banishment was the biggest brain thing we’ve ever seen on #TheTraitors. Absolute genius move. And she’s been so so good throughout the series. Harry as best ever traitor totally dethroned
Fair play to Stephen, he had the power to vote with Jack against Rachel and take all the money for himself but chose to stay loyal to Rachel and split the prize fund 👏 #TheTraitors
I sat through two hours of lunacy this afternoon. And watched 15 minutes of this guy just now.
The difference is night and day.
If you want to understand the long-term damage Donald Trump is doing to our country, it’s worth your time.
“Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.
