Someone once asked me:

“It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.

But how does the warrior stay a warrior when life becomes peaceful?”

I thought about that for a while.

And I think the question may be backwards.

A warrior in a garden does not spend every morning proving that he is still a warrior.

He tends the garden.

He protects what has grown there.

He fixes what is broken.

He teaches the young.

He does the difficult things nobody sees.

And when the people he loves can sleep without fear, he does not wonder whether he has become weak.

That was the point.

Perhaps peace does not mean the warrior has lost his purpose.

Perhaps peace is what all that training was for.

We spend so much of our lives asking:

Am I still strong?
Am I still useful?
Am I still respected?
Do I still matter?

Maybe those are the wrong questions.

Look at what is under your protection.

Is your family safe?

Are the people around you stronger because you are there?

Did you do what needed to be done today, even when nobody was watching?

Then the warrior is still there.

A sword is not valuable because it is always drawn.

Sometimes its highest purpose is making sure it never needs to be.

Take care of your garden.

That may be the greatest battle you ever win.

I could not sleep, so at 2 a.m. I drove to the only place with its lights on. A drive-thru.

The voice came through the speaker, bright as noon: "Hi! What can I get started for you?"

At 2 a.m. Bright as noon.

I ordered badly. I changed my mind twice. I asked if the fries were honorable. The voice did not miss a beat.

"Most honorable fries in the county, baby. Anything else?"

At the window she was maybe twenty. Headset on, visor, moving like a short-order general, and she handed me the bag and said, "You have a good night now, okay? Get some sleep."

Get some sleep. She had diagnosed me through a speaker.

I asked her how she stays so cheerful at 2 a.m.

She shrugged. "Everybody who comes through here at 2 a.m. is going through something. Happy people are asleep. So I'm nice. It's not hard."

I drove home slowly. The fries were honorable.

Now, some nights, I go back. Not for the food. I order a small coffee and sit in the lot and listen to her take orders through the wall, bright as noon, one car at a time, all night long.

Happy people are asleep.

She is awake.

Somebody has to be the noon.

⚠️ Warning for parents in the Sutton area of Surrey. This animal followed a 14-year-old girl home today. He asked how old she was and if she wanted to “do things with him.” He then followed her into her estate before her parents came out and confronted him.

He has been arrested. But we know nothing will happen because the police will just release him, so people need to be aware.

This happened off Oakhill Road, near the Peacocks shop end of the road. Please share so local parents know.

A Polish mother was arrested after refusing to leave her 13 year old son unattended with a police officer in Liverpool. Her son had been accused by a Nigerian family living in social housing of stealing garden keys, an allegation he denies.

The officer later threatened to pepper spray the mother, who was then arrested. The boy was taken into a police van barefoot, with the officer refusing to let him retrieve his shoes and socks. The boy also claims that the officer later broke his wrist. More evidence to follow.

Terrible cruelty. A normal 12-year-old girl should consume about 1,500 calories a day. In Mauritania, girls undergoing this practice are forced to consume up to 16,000 calories a day—more than 10 times the recommended amount for a 12-year-old girl. More than 60% of the women who underwent the practice reported becoming disabled, and nearly 30% reported having their toes broken. A terrible act of barbarity.

POST OFFICE JAILED AN INNOCENT WOMAN

Imagine. You run a small @PostOffice in Hull. You show up every day, you serve your community, you do the job. Then one day a computer program called Horizon decides you owe £59,000 that never existed. A computer program with a known glitch problem.

Post Office didn't check the software. It just marched Janet Skinner into court in 2007 and got her jailed for 9 months. She served 2 behind bars. She lost her house. She lost her job. She lost her name in the eyes of her own neighbours, all because nobody in a position of power fancied questioning a machine.

Here's where any decent organisation would stop digging the hole ... The Post Office kept digging.

A year after she walked out of prison, they hauled her back into court again, this time chasing her for "proceeds of crime."

Proceeds of a crime she never committed, calculated by a system that couldn't add up in the first place. Bold strategy from the people who broke the calculator in the first place.

Less than two weeks after that fresh nightmare finally ended, Janet's body gave out completely. Neurological collapse. Paralysed from the neck down.

Doctors told her she'd never walk again.

She spent a year in a wheelchair and two years learning to walk. She says her own immune system turned on her. Years of fighting a system that refused to admit fault, and in the end it was her own body that surrendered first.

So how does this story end? With an apology? A cheque that actually matches what she lost? Of course not.

In 2025, after everything, the compensation scheme handed her an offer worth around 15% of her claim.

Janet called it an insult. I'd call it a joke, except nobody's laughing, least of all the people who wrote the offer letter from the comfort of a job that still exists.

9 months in prison for a bug. 2 years in a wheelchair for the stress of proving her innocence. A payout that wouldn't cover the damage to her health, let alone her life. And somewhere, the people who signed off on her prosecution are still drawing a pension.

Nobody who signed off on any of this has lost a house, a job, or a night's sleep. They got promotions. She got a wheelchair and an insulting cheque. Accountability had every chance to show up here and chose not to..
