In 1916 I left my job as a schoolteacher at Cobden Street school, Loughborough and joined the Leicestershire Regiment. I served with the 8th Bn in France.

"Peace signed in the afternoon in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, in which room 48 years before, the German Empire was proclaimed. No celebrations were held-by request-owing to (i) the necessity for the ratification of the Peace Treaty..

During this period - Gratuity for commissioned service and for ranker's service received, letter of thanks from Army Council, parchment commission certificate forwarded.

Left for Harrowby by 8.30 am from Milford. Arrived at 12.30 pm. At dispersal centre 20 mins. Arrived in Loughborough at 5 pm. Given a protection certificate and allowed to wear uniform for 7 days. No pay or allowances.
