On July 25, 1993, a horrific massacre took place at St James Church in Kenilworth, Cape Town, an event that continues to haunt the memory of that tragic day.

11 murdered, 58 injured.

Seventeen-year-old Richard O'Kill was killed instantly by a bullet to the head as he heroically threw himself over his two young friends, Lisa and Bonnie, shielding them from the gunfire.

Twenty-one-year-old Gerard Harker also lost his life in an act of extraordinary bravery, diving onto a hand grenade to absorb the explosion and protect those around him. A police spokesperson later commended Gerard’s selfless sacrifice, noting that his actions likely saved many lives by containing the blast. Tragically, Gerard’s younger brother, 13-year-old Wesley, was also killed in the attack.

The Harker family was left devastated, survived by their older brother Shaun, 23, and parents Dennis and Dawn.

Among the victims were four Russian sailors—Valentin Varaksa, Pavel Valujev, Andrey Kajl, and Oleg Karamzin—as well as Guy Javens.

The perpetrators of this brutal attack on unarmed worshippers were members of the Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA), the armed wing of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), then led by Patricia de Lille, who was based in Cape Town at the time.

Today, de Lille serves in Parliament, seemingly unaccountable for the actions of her organization, which targeted innocent civilians in a place of worship.

How does someone associated with such violent rhetoric—“one settler, one bullet”—and the slaughter of unarmed churchgoers transform into a public servant?
