As we've built our workflows and developer APIs on top of @IstioMesh we've found supporting multiple versions of Istio at the same time is crucial. Locking to one single version is not realistic for our enterprise customers.

I caught the @linsun_unc #OSSummit session on the new Istio "ambient mesh". Avoids the downsides of sidecars which Lin lists, but fewer policy enforcement points means less fine-grained AuthZ. Solution proposed is start with coarse-grained "overlay layer" then add sidecars later
