Rome handed out free grain to 40,000 citizens in 73 BC. By 46 BC, Julius Caesar found 320,000 people lining up for their monthly ration. That eight-fold expansion happened in under three decades, and it shows you how welfare states actually grow.
No Roman senator stood up and announced a plan to addict a third of the city to government bread. It happened incrementally, through political competition. Each magistrate who wanted votes expanded eligibility. Each expansion normalized the next one. The citizen who once considered the dole shameful eventually expected it, then demanded it, then organized politically to protect it.
This is the core mechanism free market thinkers have identified across every era: once you create a transfer program, you create a constituency for that program. Recipients vote. Administrators build careers. Grain merchants who supply the state develop a stake in keeping the contracts flowing. The political economy locks in.
Caesar, to his credit, actually cut the rolls back to 150,000 through verification audits. It was one of his more economically coherent moves, though the Senate still murdered him. His successors quietly let the numbers climb again.
What did the dole require? Massive grain imports from Sicily, Sardinia, and Egypt, organized through state logistics at state expense, funded by taxation and conquest. When the conquest revenue dried up, the obligation remained. Rome had written a check against future military success, and future military success eventually failed to arrive.
The lesson is not complicated. Distribute a benefit and you distribute dependency. Distribute dependency and you distribute political power to whoever controls the distribution. The grain dole didn't weaken Rome overnight, but it made every subsequent reform politically impossible.

A Texas constable has unplugged every single Flock camera in his county.
"I don’t believe “safety” should be a word that automatically ends the discussion whenever individual liberty is involved."
"Flock, come get your GARBAGE out of my county..."
County commissioners in Hood County voted unanimously in April to end its contract with Flock, which included three cameras, and the constable finished the job of shutting down the Flock cameras by unplugging them and covering them with a hood.
The constable further wrote:
"When government has the ability to collect, search and share information about the movements of people who aren’t suspected of committing a crime, I believe that raises serious Fourth Amendment and privacy concerns.
The answer can’t simply be, “Trust us. We won’t misuse it.”
🚨#BREAKING: A grand jury has REFUSED TO INDICT an man for destroying a Flock camera in Ohio.
Cody Morelock allegedly brought down the camera, solar panel and support pole before destroying them.
A grand jury wouldn't indict him and the charges have been dismissed.
What a slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers. Worse than socialism! Dumping foreign beef in U.S. markets can temporarily lower prices but it won’t incentivize American farmers to raise more beef. Bring back Country Of Origin Labels & pass my PRIME Act.
This chick got me banned from @cnn for saying I believed in the first amendment and boobs. Now she posts more pics of her boobs than Sydney Sweeney. She owes me a public apology.
Novak Djokovic in his documentary on why he refused the COVID vaccine:
"Because I didn't need it. Why should I get the vaccine? I'm healthy, I'm an athlete. I had corona. I had immunity. I wasn't a threat to anyone. There was no reason for me to get vaccinated. It's my freedom to choose which that fundamental right that you have as a human being on this planet — the freedom to choose — which was taken from a lot of people."
I don’t care if you’re 40 or 70. I don’t care if you haven’t worked out in two decades, two weeks, or two days. I don’t care if you have access to the fanciest gym in the world or just your living room. I built my fitness app for you. You show up. I handle all the thinking.
BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys practice was delayed two hours today after a player found an unknown white powdery substance on the field. Jerry Jones immediately suspended practice and called the police. After analysis, experts confirmed it was the goal line. Practice resumed once officials decided the Cowboys were unlikely to see it again this season.
During the Missouri v. Biden lawsuit that I filed as Missouri AG we discovered the Biden CDC was sending daily emails to Facebook demanding they censor posts that raised concerns about the COVID vaccine's impact on pregnant women. We now have stone cold evidence as to why.
Carl Menger published Grundsätze der Volkswirtschaftslehre in 1871, and the entire edifice of mainstream economics cracked. No committees. No government grant. One Viennese professor working alone, insisting that value originates in the human mind, not in the hours of labor poured into production. Marx had built his entire system on labor-value theory that same decade. Menger showed it was wrong.
The German Historical School, which then dominated European economics, had rejected universal economic laws entirely. They believed every nation needed its own bespoke theory. Menger told them, politely then less politely, that this was nonsense.
What followed, the Methodenstreit of the 1880s, was a genuine intellectual war. Menger's student Böhm-Bawerk would later dismantle Marx's capital theory so thoroughly that serious socialist economists spent decades trying to patch the holes. You get to inherit that victory for free. The least you can do is understand where it started: one book, one man, 1871.
