@EddiePunch@AoifeMFoley@mcmnorris@unadunphy As happened at second level many years ago, the loss of explicitly vocational eduction, to be replaced by the academic. It will be sad (for want of a better word) if the TUs follow a similar path, prioritising โresearchโ, publishing papers etc.. over a vocational education focus.
@dineen20dineen Did the Leaving Cert in 1976, laid a concrete yard on the farm in warm sunshine - massive summer in 1976 - the list brings it all back ๐
@eoinmauricedaly The last three presidents have rewritten the role and have led very well. It was easy to be proud of them. Some people now seem to wish to rewrite the job description to put the very effective leader of the opposition out of a job! The legislative role is a mixed blessing, Eoin
@theresareidy They are probably right! While GDP grows and is comparatively high, actual individual consumption (AIC) - on a PPP adjusted basis - shows that Irish householdsโ actual consumption of goods and services is below the EU average (c. 90%). It may be a better indicators of wellbeing
@DanMulhall We have made wonderful progress. But I fear that we are too self congratulatory on some fronts. Using AIC (Actual Individual Consumption) as a relative measure, Ireland was 6% below the EU average in 2022. We are not in the same league as the Scandinavians in national governance
@echolivecork The north of the city needs an outer ring road. In its absence, a lot of commuter and commercial traffic uses the Kilcully road (and the "super highway" in Ballyvolane!) for orbital travel around this side of the city.
@logical_conor Averages hide a lot too. I'd expect a much more even spread of health spend (and indeed AIC) per capita in the EU (and Ireland) compared with the US. It does put the US spend in a useful context. The AIC data is useful in putting our health spend within a context
@logical_conor Very interesting take, thank you, Conor. As an aside, a look across the X axis is interesting too - our actual individual consumption (AIC) is, for example, below the EU average (90% of average in 2023). So our proportionate (to AIC) spend is an outlier - these are log scales!
@Marcusdstewart@TomClonan The minimum sentencing has been in her sights for quite a while.
But it's more a look into our collective misogynistic souls than a criminal justice issue. That a young man could do what he did is a blight on all of us. What values are we sharing?
@Marcusdstewart@TomClonan The current justice minister has done everything in her power, in my view, to prioritise the issiue of violence against women. And all she has got is ridicule, being repeatedly told it's the wrong topic. She deserved better support.
@theresareidy I hope it's some sort of turning point. I expect it to be formally challenged, which might eventually set some sort of legal yardstick. The army needs a moment's reflection on this too!
@moranjohna1 A foolish consistency used to be the weapon of little minds. Today, it's the capacity to find an out of context utterance from our past via Google. One might expect less pettiness from the larger parties. Hang in there, John
