Let's talk about Brazil.

Ancelotti has moved to a 4-4-2 diamond, and it seems this will be the way Brazil will play until the end of the World Cup.

There is an important change in the attacking dynamics, especially regarding Vinicius Jr. Previously, Brazil usually looked to get him wide, allowing him to receive in those areas, accelerate, and carry attacks himself. Now, he is playing more inside and looking to make runs in behind to finish attacks.

In the end, Ancelotti and Brazil have moved from Vinicius Jr, an attacker, being the point of reference of attacks, to having the midfielders, Cunha and Paqueta, dictate and organize play to then find Vinicius to finish. Brazil have moved from attacking more in wide areas to attack more centrally.

One reason behind this change could be that, previously, with Vinicius being the player carrying attacks from wide areas, Brazil’s games often became chaotic. Vini will naturally attempt many 1v1 situations, which can lead to more transitions and more open games. The second reason could be that Ancelotti is looking for a structure that can accommodate Neymar in the false 9 position. He knows that in certain games, especially when Brazil are behind, they will need his creativity in the final third.

Overall, the dynamics look promising. Paqueta drops deeper alongside Casemiro to help organise play, while Guimaraes has a bigger role making runs in behind, taking advantage of Cunha’s dropping movements to drag centre-backs out of position. Unfortunately, Brazil did not have much time to work on this, as they were playing in a different way earlier in the process. Because of that, the relationships are not yet ideal, and this is something to consider.

Defensively, Brazil moves into a 4-4-2, with Rayan becoming the right winger and Paqueta moving to the left wing to defend. Brazil leave Vinicius Jr and Cunha higher up the pitch, ready to attack in transition.

Brazil have found a way of playing that accommodates many of their players’ strengths.
