The Lancet staff are going on strike for the first time in the journal’s 200-year history.
Is it surprising? I don’t think so.
Authors produce the research and write the papers. Reviewers provide scientific evaluation, mostly for free. Editors carry much of the burden of keeping the system running. Then the same academic community pays thousands of dollars in APCs to make its own work open access.
Yet staff are now striking over pay, while the publisher’s scientific, technical and medical division reports more than £1 billion in annual adjusted operating profit.
So there is a simple question: where does all that money go?
Authors, reviewers, editors, and institutions are carrying an ever-growing burden. I don’t think the current academic publishing model is sustainable.

Inevitable that these two jokers jumped on the 'natural superiority' bandwagon. The chat shows, the legacy media articles, the crappy periodicals, the weird private university research centres, the political interventions etc. etc. - anyone who is yet to notice that this is an organised network trying to kill off a weakened institutionalised liberal-left isn't paying attention.

🇮🇱 Enough with these caricatures, Minister @gidonsaar.
In Belgium, the judiciary is independent and makes its decisions —whether one agrees with them or not— free from any political influence. I recall that the proceedings in question were initiated by representatives of the Jewish community themselves. To portray those as a country’s desire to undermine the religious freedom of Jews is defamatory. This freedom has never been called into question and never will be in our country. Our Constitution protects it.
Since you yourself recently urged against conducting diplomacy via Twitter, I suggest that we discuss all these issues during a meeting in Israel at a time that suits you best, in order to put an end to any misinterpretations.
