I need people to understand how difficult it is to get an NIH grant. You spend months writing a proposal, following strict guidelines that include a detailed multiyear budget, bios of everyone on your team, plans for participant safety & ethical conduct. Then you send it off -1/n
Congratulations to our undergrad Russel Shiga on his first conference presentation and winning 2nd place in the PBT: Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Toxicology session. #EntSoc24
Congrats to Dianshu for completing the #CSHLdros24 workshop! The insights gained will benefit Dianshu, my lab, and our #UFBugs community, including colleagues interested in applying fly techniques to non-model insects. Our sincere thanks to the organizers and selection committee.
Please RT! My lab at @UF has openings for a postdoc & a technician/postbac. We use cutting-edge techniques in Ca2+ imaging, optogenetics, behavior & connectomics to study neural circuits and feeding regulation in fruit flies. Pls email me if interested. https://t.co/SELuct6aVN
π PBT Member Spotlight π | #ESAPBT π§¬πmember Aria Deluna is a Ph.D. student at @UFEntNem. Aria investigates the dynamics of insect-microbe interactions πͺ°π¦ . She leverages her expertise and leadership skills to drive positive change in #ESAPBT.

Had a nice lab BBQ gathering last week and bid farewell to our beloved visiting student Yi-Ting as she returned to Taiwan.
Luckily it did not rain until we were leaving. βοΈ
A big thanks to Ariana for treating us homemade Chinese food on her last day before she transitions to the Doctor of Plant Medicine (DPM) @ufplantdoctors program. We'll miss you in the lab and your smile!
#EntSoc23 was GREAT! Big cheers to my students for presenting their work, including Yi-Ting who won second place in the student competition. @EntsocAmerica
Celebrating Chenia's NIH post-baccalaureate research award and Dianshu's first UF publication in @JournalSpectrum while he completed two years of TA service. Congrats!
Hiring a postdoc to use AI to look at host-microbiome interactions in flies. Exp with AI, bioinf, and stats are required. Preference given to candidates familiar with metagenomic analyses.
Stipend $96k. $7.2k for health insurance. $9.7k travel. $1.5k relocation.
2yr appointment.
Grateful for the opportunity to share my career path and research at @uprrpπ΅π·for the #NIH RISE seminar. Had a great time meeting with the faculty and students there - thank you for the hospitality!
Thanks to all lab members for the great gathering & baby shower for Saif's family last month. And we just learnt that the baby has arrived, congrats!
Big shout out to Alessa and Olivia for their first-time poster presentation at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, showcasing their work on insect behavioral assay development and temperature effects on insecticide resistance. #NSFREU#UFBugs@UFCALS
@ashleymkopec Admire your bravery in the career transition. Two yrs into TT, also got a newborn (2nd child) and shortly after, COVID hit. 2020-21 were very rough, but got my R award in 2022. As a father, I can only imagine how difficult it is for academic moms. Thanks for sharing your story!
Yi-Ting Hung, a new visiting Ph.D. student from Taiwan, will work with the Wong lab using machine learning and statistical modeling to study the effects of diet and microbiome on insect behavior and metabolism.
