This tree was uprooted from Mungaria Primary School- a Kikuyu Independent Schools Association ground and carried about one and a half kilometres to Aguthi, the work concentration camp. There, men were forced to water it with their mouths from the stream at Kaigonde a far. Not with jerrycans as free labour. With their mouths. As humiliation. As proof that the body of a people could be bent to serve even a stolen tree on killing ground. That is the record. An independent school stripped of its tree. A camp that turned prisoners into beasts of irrigation. Water from Kaigonde taken not to sustain life with honour, but to mark dominance over those who refused to sell out.
Since last year the tree has begun to die. I do not rush to a scientific comfort. I place the fact before our elders and ask for their reading
