And now, a part of the Layover story that was also part of his debut—and which will never be erased or forgotten: the sabotage orchestrated by the HYBE/BIGHIT structure itself during that era.

This completely changes how that era should be remembered.

Because we aren't simply talking about an album that received “little promotion.”

We are talking about a debut that had to fight against the very structure meant to promote it.

We are talking about a series of decisions, omissions, distribution failures, and obstacles that directly affected the album's visibility, availability, and commercial performance.

BIGHIT did not promote Layover on the scale that a debut of this magnitude demanded. There was no massive, consistent social media campaign. Achievements were ignored or failed to receive due prominence. Platform promotion was limited. There was a lack of promotional support, minimal playlist presence, and practically no effort commensurate with Taehyung’s global reach. And all this despite Layover having the highest pre-order demand for a K-pop soloist—surpassing even some of the group's own albums.

And when the public tried to compensate for this lack of support, they encountered obstacles.

Broken links. Availability issues. Delays. Distribution failures. Insufficient stock. Products that simply weren't available where they should have been.

At launch, a huge volume of sales could not be counted immediately because there wasn't enough stock to meet demand. Later, internal documents revealed during a National Assembly audit showed that the company had overstocked albums for its other artists to artificially inflate first-week sales figures, yet failed to stock enough copies of Layover—resulting in the cancellation of over 800,000 sales.

And it didn't end with the physical album.

When the vinyl version finally arrived—a full year after the original release—it came in only one edition.

Then there is the most absurd issue of all: retailers in the United States were reportedly instructed to place Layover vinyls on shelves only at the end of Billboard’s first tracking week—precisely the period when physical availability would have had the greatest impact on the release's performance. When it finally hit the shelves, stock sold out once again at several major retailers.

And then there are the internal documents.

They revealed that HYBE monitored communities hostile toward Taehyung, that there were records regarding the protection of users from those communities, and that over a thousand negative comments about Layover were flagged in materials analyzing public perception of the album. Yes, more than 1,000 negative comments were planted on Theqoo to sway public opinion.

They tried to limit his exposure.
They failed at distribution.
They failed at stocking.
They failed at promotion.
There were delays.
There were broken links.
There were availability issues across different platforms.
There were obstacles preventing the content from reaching the public.

And yet, Layover prevailed.

The public found the album.
The music found its way.
Taehyung found his audience.

They could limit promotion.
They could delay products.
They could keep stock levels low.
They could hinder access.
They could downplay achievements.

But they couldn't erase the impact.

Three years later, Layover continues to be celebrated, analyzed, rediscovered, and remembered.

And that is perhaps the most important part of this story: it wasn't HYBE's structure that determined the scale of Layover. It was the public.

And everything that happened during its debut is part of the story, too.

It won't be erased.
It won't be rewritten.
It won't be forgotten.

Because Layover didn't disappear—despite everything.
Layover endured—despite everything.
