A wild octopus reaching for your hand is the closest you will ever come to touching an alien.

One filmmaker spent 26 days visiting the same wild octopus off South Africa before it reached out and wrapped an arm around his hand. That footage became My Octopus Teacher, the 2021 Oscar winner for best documentary.

Octopuses and humans last shared an ancestor around 600 million years ago, a simple worm crawling along the seafloor. Every animal you can name branched off after that point. Whatever intelligence an octopus has, it built on its own, with none of the wiring we share with a dog or a fish.

An octopus brain is put together in a completely different way. It holds around 500 million neurons, about the same as a dog, but two-thirds of them sit in the arms instead of a central brain. Each arm has its own dense bundle of nerve cells and can taste, feel, and pick a direction without checking with headquarters. When an arm drifts toward your hand, the arm itself is doing part of the deciding.

They also tell people apart. At the Seattle Aquarium, biologist Roland Anderson ran a two-week test in which one keeper fed eight giant Pacific octopuses while another poked them with a bristly stick. By the end, the animals rose up to greet the feeder and soaked the second keeper with water, even in matching uniforms. They were tracking specific humans and remembering how each one behaved.

The biology gets stranger the closer you look. An octopus rewrites most of its own brain proteins on the fly, editing its RNA, the working copy of its genes, to adjust its nervous system when the water turns cold. Humans do the same to only about 3 percent of theirs. Octopuses also run on three hearts and blue blood that carries oxygen with copper instead of iron.

So when a wild octopus balances its fear against its curiosity and stretches one arm toward a stranger in a mask, a 600-million-year-old branch of life, wired nothing like us, is deciding that a human is worth touching. The moment in that clip took millions of years of separate evolution to become possible.
