कोळ्यांमधील (स्पायडर) नर आणि मादी मधील नैसर्गिक भयावह वास्तव:

हा फोटो मी नंदू तांबे यांच्या स्वतःच्या खाजगी जंगलामध्ये घेतला होता.

जो मोठा कोळी दिसत आहे, ती आहे कोळ्यांमधील मादी आणि तिच्या पाठीवर जे मुंगीसारखे लाल आणि अत्यंत छोटे कीटक दिसत आहे, ते तिचे पिल्लू नाही, तर तो आहे नर कोळी!

निसर्गाची ही एक अत्यंत रंजक आणि तितकीच अजब लीला आहे. हा जो कोळी आहे, त्याला 'गोल्डन ऑर्ब-वीव्हर' (Golden Orb-weaver) किंवा 'जायंट वुड स्पायडर' (Giant Wood Spider) असे म्हणतात आणि याचे शास्त्रीय नाव Nephila असे आहे.

बऱ्याच कीटकांच्या किंवा कोळ्यांच्या प्रजातींमध्ये नर आणि मादी यांच्यामध्ये जो इतका प्रचंड मोठा आकाराचा फरक असतो, त्याला शास्त्रीय भाषेत 'सेक्शुअल साईझ डायमॉर्फिझम' (Sexual Size Dimorphism - SSD) किंवा लैंगिक द्विरूपता असे म्हणतात. या विशिष्ट प्रजातींमध्ये मादी ही नरापेक्षा कित्येक पटीने मोठी असते.

निसर्गाने अशी रचना करण्यामागे एक खास वैज्ञानिक कारण आहे. मादीला शेकडो-हजारो अंडी द्यायची असतात, त्यामुळे तिच्या शरीरात जास्त ऊर्जा आणि मोठी जागा असणे आवश्यक असते, तर नराचे मुख्य काम फक्त मादीला शोधून प्रजनन करणे एवढेच असते, त्यामुळे त्याचा आकार छोटा राहतो आणि त्याचे वजन कमी असल्याने त्याला मादीच्या जाळ्यावर तिला न समजता अलगद फिरता येते.

यापुढची प्रक्रिया तर निसर्गाचा एक अत्यंत क्रूर पण व्यावहारिक नियम दर्शवते. जेव्हा हा छोटा नर आपला जीव धोक्यात घालून मादीजवळ जातो आणि त्यांचा समागम पूर्ण होतो, तेव्हा मादीला अंडी तयार करण्यासाठी प्रचंड ऊर्जेची आणि प्रथिनांची (Proteins) गरज असते.

समागम झाल्यावर मादीला खूप भूक लागते आणि ती त्या नर कोळ्यालाच खाऊन टाकते! या प्रक्रियेला शास्त्रीय परिभाषेत 'सेक्शुअल कॅनिबॅलिझम' (Sexual Cannibalism) म्हणजेच लैंगिक नरभक्षकता असे म्हणतात.

नराचे हे बलिदान मादीला आणि पर्यायाने त्यांच्या भावी पिढीला पोषण देण्यासाठी कामी येते. निसर्गात पाहताना हे थोडे भयानक वाटत असले तरी, प्रत्येक गोष्टीमागे काहीतरी भक्कम कारण दडलेले असते; अगदी या मृत्यूच्या खेळातही जीवनाचेच एक मोठे चक्र लपलेले आहे.

It's only a little snip of a scene, but sometimes that's all you need to hear the quiet, isn't it? As the early sun reached over the wooded hillsides and trickled down into the fields, there was no sound except the skylarks above and the slow, gentle grazing of this young lady, who seemed quite oblivious to the beauty surrounding her.

Helsinki just opened one of the world’s longest car-free crossings.

The Kruunuvuori Bridge stretches about 1,191 metres across the water, connecting Helsinki’s eastern districts with the city centre. But unlike most bridges of this scale, it has no private car lanes — it was built for pedestrians, cyclists, and trams.

Officially opened to walkers and cyclists in April 2026, the bridge is also Finland’s longest and tallest bridge, turning a piece of transport infrastructure into a new urban landmark.
