Mehdi Kharatian, a government-affiliated analyst, admitted that during the December 2025 and January 2026 protests, the Islamic Republic was losing control of roughly 100 cities and that some local government offices were close to collapse.

He further acknowledged that after special forces were deployed, the number of people killed increased, an admission that the regime resorted to extraordinary levels of violence to regain control.

Another admission from within the regime itself: these were not isolated protests. They were a nationwide uprising that shook the Islamic Republic to its core. By Kharatian's own account, the regime was rapidly losing control until security forces intervened and the death toll reached historic levels.

In my view, this is a tacit admission that the regime feared its own collapse.
