Among other things, what this tells you is that all of these products could always have been made without artificial dyes. These ingredients are not “essential” even to the worst kinds of slop processed food.
Months ago, a cynical man said something to the effect that Mr. Sarris’s life was only picture-perfect because he deliberately made it that way.
As I design the packaging for our honey to sell this autumn, I find myself thinking a lot about Simon, his photography, and that man.
The shape of our hang tags, the string that ties them to the glass bottle, the wood wool packing material, how the label on the box is placed…a hundred tiny choices that will result in a beautiful sum.
This too is true for Simon’s life. You can accuse aesthetically minded people like him of staging everything, of going out of their way to create a beautiful scene but…
…that earnestly RESULTS in a beautiful scene. It is no less true because he CHOSE it.
This is good.

Sometimes goodbyes are obvious, apparent, distinct, drawn out, explicit, are planned and can be seen coming.
Other times, goodbyes are subtle, elusive, accidental, slippery, abrupt, unplanned and sudden.
The classic commentary is “One day you played with your friends outside for the last time and didn’t know it.”
Everything that has a beginning, inevitably has its end.
And it’s not always clear which goodbye will meet you. For that reason, every moment is worth treasuring and savouring in the present moment.
You are presently in “The Good Ol’ Days” and won’t even realise it until you’ve moved past them. Be here now, and enjoy it. Because this too shall pass.
“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men … but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen.” Matthew 6:5-8.
