ETFs are the unit trusts of the 21st century.

The concept is essentially the same. You pool your money with other investors to get exposure to a diversified basket of assets without needing to pick individual stocks yourself. Unit trusts built that foundation and made investing accessible to everyday people for decades.

But ETFs took everything that made unit trusts powerful and stripped away the things that held people back. The fees are lower. The pricing is transparent and happens in real time. There are no high minimum investment requirements. You can buy into a single ETF that tracks 500 of the world's largest companies with R10 on your phone in under two minutes.

The wrapper is different but the principle is identical. Your money working across hundreds of companies, sectors and geographies simultaneously without you needing to research each one individually or pay a fund manager a premium to do it for you.

If you already understand why unit trusts make sense then you already understand ETFs. The evolution just made the same idea cheaper, faster and more accessible to everyone regardless of how much you have to start with.
