Mike had zero actual narrative development towards byler, he wasn't written as a character in s3 and s4, he was just a prize that Will and El were passing back and forth. If byler was endgame I think it’d feel kinda rushed

What we had up until s5 (and even in s5 vol1) was still way too little for a well-developed byler endgame. Most byler “proof” scenes in s3&4 are just Will’s heartbreak scenes. And we mistook mileven’s bad writing for byler’s romantic development.

It pisses me off when byler antis say we ignore the canon queer rep in ST. Rovickie was developed and broken up offscreen, given no real arc, Vickie barely had any screentime, and their only romantic scene was a narrative device for Will's arc which also received zero closure.
