Good News: PISA Assessment Will Be Coming to the South East Soon

After I wrote about my desire for the South East to participate in the PISA assessment, I received a message from Raj.

He flew in from the United States, and we met in Toronto to discuss extensively how the assessment could be conducted across the region.

This assessment is very important to me because if the South East performs strongly on the global stage, it could significantly boost the region’s international reputation and help demonstrate the quality of talent we are developing. This could strengthen our case for attracting world-class companies such as Apple, Texas Instruments, NVIDIA, Tesla, and others to invest in the region.

We are deliberately nurturing a large pool of exceptional talent, and the world needs to see what is happening here.

In 10 years, our ambition is for the South East to become a major source of talent for the global workforce.

And we are very serious about it.

I arrived in Toronto, Canada, yesterday. Over the next few days, I will be studying their journey to civilization, not just admiring what they have built, but trying to understand how they built it.

Until today, I knew very little about the extraordinary contributions of medieval Islamic civilization to human progress. Algebra, major advances in trigonometry and decimal mathematics, and remarkable breakthroughs in medicine, science, astronomy, and agriculture all flourished during this period.

It reminded me of something important:

Civilization is not the skyscrapers. Civilization is the system that makes the skyscrapers possible.

The most important foundations of a civilized society are often silent and almost invisible: reliable institutions, respect for rules, scientific thinking, functioning systems, public order, education, accountability, and a culture where things simply work.

Those are the things behind the beautiful cities, the skyscrapers, the infrastructure, and the prosperity.

And those are the things I am interested in studying.

A society does not move from the developing world to the developed world by accident. It is a deliberate journey. It requires deliberate study, deliberate research, deliberate institution-building, deliberate investment in knowledge, and, ultimately, deliberate changes in behaviour and culture.

If we genuinely want to transform our society, we must stop merely admiring developed societies.

We must study how they became developed.
