Q. you opened the door to ‘vogue man.’ hearing that james would be the first to take the stage naturally made me applaud. what kind of person does james find cool?
🦅 someone who is passionate about what they do and isn’t afraid of new challenges. you can feel a great deal of energy from people like that. they inspire those around them and leave a lasting impression. especially when i see someone completely immersed in what they’re doing, i find myself thinking, “ah, this person really has no limits”

Q. the way james speaks paints such vivid pictures, almost like a movie. like when he described the los angeles song camp by saying, “we ate so many acai bowls that everyone’s tongues were purple all day.” it feels like you remember moments through images. could you share the most peaceful scene that comes to mind?
🦅 i’m reminded of a day recently when i went to a jjimjilbang by myself. it was an incredibly quiet space. it was so quiet that i could even hear my own heartbeat. lying there completely still in that moment felt really peaceful

Q. you come across as someone who is humorous and isn’t afraid to make a fool of yourself. maybe it’s because you’re handsome! where does that uninhibited sense of humor come from?
🦅 hmm… i’m not exactly handsome. maybe you just picked up on a unique vibe. there isn’t really a particular source of it. i think you found my honest, unfiltered side witty. thank you for seeing me in such a positive light

Q. quite different from that side of you, you were truly incredible at lollapalooza chicago. even your eyes looked different. what were you feeling at the time? as you know, feel free to answer in english whenever you want.
🦅 whenever i step onto any stage, there’s always a quote that comes to mind: “don’t step into the room like you want the role, step into the room like you own it.” i always try to approach my performances with that mindset. performing at lollapalooza chicago, which had been a dream stage of mine since i was young, was truly an honor, and i’m incredibly grateful for it. because of that, i prepared myself with the mindset that i was going to conquer that stage

Q. cortis’s music takes people of every generation back to their own personal era. for me, it takes me back to my middle school days. there’s the rock sound of ‘what you want’ and the mood created by the electronic sounds of ‘redred,’ but there’s also that raw sense of freedom unique to that time in my life, which makes me feel like i’m reconnecting with my younger self. is there an era that james wants to reach or connect with through music?
🦅 if there’s an era i want to express or reach, it’s right now. there are things you can only say in this moment, and feelings that can only be expressed now. even when we’re creating cortis’s music, choreography, and videos together, we always think about how we can express who we are right now in the most honest way possible. you can imagine the past and the future in your head, but the present is right there in front of you. when it comes to expressing yourself through art, there’s nothing more beautiful than the present

Q: Would you say that experience [of surviving cancer] still shapes the way you make and express music today?

🦌: There’s a line in “Noise,” one of the tracks on the mini album, that goes, “Trust me / Know I’m able / Take it slow / Ain’t no trouble / Don’t give up dawn til night.” I wanted to use the start of my music under the name EVAN to tell people that good days do eventually come around. When I sing on “Death of Me,” the lead single, that this “ain’t the death of me,” it comes from a place of having actually gone right up to the edge of death myself. No matter how far down I went, I felt over and over that it was never really the end. I hope EVER hears that message and finds some hope in it.
