I'm not making this stuff up. This is the history of the SBC:
After growing for 80 YEARS without any Confession of faith, Southern Baptists grew for another 90 years with a “Consensus of Opinion” Confession which was never used to exclude churches. It was a “Guide for Interpretation.”

W. B. Johnson was the most influential Baptist leader of the 19th century. Before founding the Southern Baptist convention, he served as president of allBaptists in America. He wrote the SBC’s Constitution. He preached the Baptist Manifesto at the first convention. He was elected the first President, and while serving as president he wrote the book that coalesced all the different tribes of Baptists into one SBC.

These show that the Founders never intended for our Convention to be defined or unified by a man-made compilationof doctrinal statements. The Bible itself was enough.

“Christ has already given the Revelation of his will in a complete and perfect code of precepts(the Bible). So the impropriety of having any human selection or compilation of God’s Word as a standard of faith and practice, is manifestly evident!” If it is argued that a prepared compilation (confession) “contains what is in the Bible” then the question comes up, “Why then form a compilation? Why not use the Bible itself as the standard? Can any man present God’s System in a selection or compilation of some of its parts, as better than God has done it himself, in a whole in his own Book? “

“Suppose the U.S. legislature selected portions of the U.S. Constitution and compiled them into a book, and then set it forth as The Standard by which all laws should be made! Would the people allow that?”
