@Alex_Hedgefox2 He's doubting that he can protect Chip and he knows he can't beat Dark Gaia in his base. If Chip turned out to just be a regular being, Sonic *would* have lost and he knows it

And no, Sega had heavy control from the outset, as the writers have said. Hence the Shadow characterisation, etc.
