🤯🐦 One of our ringed Redwing LEGS has been recovered in Finland!
Ringed at Cannock Chase in Oct 2024 and recovered in Kouvola, Finland, in May 2026, 1,961 km (1,219 miles) away. 🇬🇧➡️🇫🇮
Every recovery helps reveal the incredible journeys these birds make.

🦅 WMRG’s latest project is underway 👀 Colour-ringing Kestrels! Spot a white ring with black lettering? Report it and help us understand more about our West Midlands Kestrels. #Birding#Conservation
Who can resist an oystercatcher chick? 🐣💚🤍
Three of these incredible little chicks were colour ringed a few days ago @LaneMarsh , all under the watchful eyes of mum & dad. Always a privilege to see them up close, and even better to report that all three are doing brilliantly
A lovely morning spent checking 20 nest boxes on a private site in Warwickshire 🌿🐣
An incredible 110 Blue Tit chicks were ringed today, a fantastic sign that it’s shaping up to be a positive breeding year for this beautiful species 💙
Always a privilege to monitor these birds
Jack snipe originally ringed @StaffsWildlife Cuckoo Bank on 19/01/25 has been recaught by a local group 6 km away at Hobble End, Staffordshire on 07/03/26, which shows the bird has returned back to the local area following migration, which is something we see regularly now.
Private site in Warwickshire yesterday saw a nice spring start with 41 birds of 13 species including 7 Blackcap, 5 Chiffchaff, Siskin, Kingfisher and Great spotted Woodpecker.
Looking forward to what the season brings💚🐦⬛
We had an amazing bat walk around @ladywalk_nr on Friday night thanks to Warwickshire bat group for leading the walk, just some of the thermal footage I took @crackedbrummie
The UK longevity record for Barn Owl was 15 years and 7 months. last year I retrapped a male that I had ringed nearly 17 years earlier. However, last night I retrapped a female that had been ringed just over 18 years earlier !
Exciting news from North Staffordshire!
Last night, we ringed a new male Nightjar at one of our monitoring sites, where a nest is also due to hatch any day now. Stay tuned for some adorable chick photos soon! 🐣🌟 #nightjar#Conservation#wildlife
Good to see our North Staffordshire Pied Flycatcher & Redstart project rebuilding following the vandalism of our boxes a couple of years ago. This year we have ringed 63 Pied Fly chicks + 2 adults and 10 Redstarts.
We went out to a Peregrine Falcon, which appears to have been kept in captivity and released in very poor condition. Thankfully it was rescued by Woodlands small Wildlife Rescue and taken to a specialist rehab centre.
We have taken DNA in hope to trace back to original nest site.
Meet 6J, which is the male of the only breeding pair of stonechat found @SuttonParkNNR this year.
It’s a real surprise how quickly these have dropped off, however lots of dogs off leads in Habitat, 1 was seen to force fledge the chicks from the nest. We need to be better!
Great to see Nightjars back on Cannock Chase last night with the first male caught and ringed of the season. Great to see such good habitat on @StaffordshireCC and amazing support from their wardens.
The badger is our largest carnivore. They are however more omnivorous. Earthworms make up a massive part of their diet. They also eat nuts and berries. It’s rare to see a badger with a carcass. Scavenged or hunted I don’t know? She really doesn’t want to share it.
Congratulations to the 17 sites who participated in yesterday's #westmidsalldayer - some impressive totals considering the less than conducive weather. Star bird of the day was undoubtedly the Glossy Ibis which graced both Branston and Ladywalk. Well done all 👏
@WestMidBirdClub
Fantastic news: The Sand Martin bank we built in Partnership with @stwater is being used and currently has 5 active nests. We use @ZEISSBirding Trail Cams to monitor the nest bank, which gives us great footage and keeps us up to date with daily activity.
Individual grooming of the face, legs, belly and tail to maintain coat and remove parasites. Collaborative grooming, allows access to areas that cannot be reached by individual grooming, rump and back. It also strengthens social bonds in the group. @ladywalk_nr
Unfortunately this walk at Brook Meadow that was due to take place tomorrow has had to be postponed until 10am-12 noon on Saturday 17th May due to the weather that’s forecast.
Is ethics in birding at an all time low?
Council now having to put barriers up to stop people from disturbing nesting birds in Staffordshire.
A very sad state of affairs and genuinely shocked.😳
We can only change this by challenging poor behaviour @WestMidBirdClub
