Across the United States, more than 60% of the 400 urban #PublicTransit agencies suspended #fares during the #COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in 2020, only 11 cases of full fare-free public transport existed.
What is behind this transformation?
While we identify shared rationales, such as the commitment to protect operators and riders, and sometimes to provide financial relief for passengers, the conditions that led to the adoption of FFPT, both as a short-term and long-term policy option, varied significantly.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, one of the reviewers asked about the relevance of analysing geographical phenomena in Poland for the global audience... Would this question be raised if our empirical evidence was collected in the UK or US?
New article! It's the first one we've written on the geography of fare-free public transport (FFPT) in Poland, looking at what kind of localities have developed the policy.

Besides the contribution to the debate on FFPT, our article seeks to add to the decolonisation of transport geographies: most of the localities cited in the paper have never appeared in the Journal of Transport Geography.
