In their first season without Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, the Phoenix Mercury returned to the playoffs not only because of their veterans but also behind standout performances from their rookies.

Phoenix’s Monique Akoa Makani spoke to me about what she thought was the biggest takeaway for the team from tonight’s win against the Storm, and breaking their six-game losing streak.

I asked Mercury HC Nate Tibbetts about the team breaking their six-game skid, and how he hopes to take tonight’s momentum into Portland against the Fire.

"It's just something positive. It's something we needed, and we just don't take the little wins. I hope it's the beginning of something, but I think we can definitely use that to keep improving ourselves and go on this road and try to get some more (wins)." -Monique Akoa Makani to @wlopezde

"Wasn't a lot of fun," Tibbetts said with a laugh. "But, it's going to make us stronger, and we're going to continue to get better because of it. I didn't think that we were great here tonight, but when you're searching for one, you'll take it however you can get it. And there's some areas that we can learn from tonight, but just a very gutty win to start a road trip."

Questions/grievances came, and I did my best to answer them in my first Mercury mailbag of the season!
Talked about Nate Tibbetts possibly being on the hot seat, the Mercury's offensive & defensive struggles, as well as if their shelf life has expired.

That, and combined with New York’s 23-0 run in the last 5:18. Phoenix, leading by one at the half, now trail by 17 at the end of the third quarter.
