Prior to this season, only Cynthia Cooper and Seimone Augustus had averaged at least 18 points while shooting over 45% from the floor as guards. Caitlin Clark was the lone rookie to post at least 15 points and 5 assists per game. Debbie Black stood alone as the only first-year player to average 5 assists with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 or better.
No one has ever done all three in the same season, but Paige Bueckers is currently on pace to be the first.
She’s fresh off a national championship to close out her college career and is now on track to claim Rookie of the Year honors. What she’s doing is remarkable by any standard. Among rookies over the last 25 seasons, her (18.5) points per game would rank seventh, her (5.3) assists would rank fourth, her (1.8) steals would sit inside the top ten, and her (2.65) assist-to-turnover ratio would rank first.
Of course, critiques come quickly, with some saying she’s “not impacting winning.” But context matters. The Wings went 9–31 last season, lost three of their top four scorers before Bueckers arrived, and saw two notable acquisitions traded midseason. A rookie guard—no matter the talent—can’t flip that kind of situation to a playoff berth overnight.
But even with a roster not built to win right now, the numbers still tell a clear story. Dallas is 7–18 with Bueckers on the floor, and 12 of those losses came by single digits. Without her, the Wings are 1–6, with five of those losses by double digits. It’s clear Bueckers makes this team more competitive.
She’s done all this while navigating constant roster turnover—injuries, trades, new arrivals—and zero continuity. On top of that, Bueckers has battled through her own injuries along the way.
So, while this looks like a losing season, there are a few bright spots. One clear takeaway: Paige Bueckers is the best guard under 25 in the league. The Wings’ 12 single-digit losses with Bueckers on the floor show they’re just a piece or two away from getting over the hump. With a chance at the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft, and if the Wings can add two valuable veteran players around Paige, the rebuild could gain serious momentum.
Paige is out and suddenly JJ Quinerly is out of the starting lineup and Chris Koclanes is playing EVERYONE in the position they’re actually comfortable with 😭😭 #WNBA#DallasWings
