This is a political editorial, not objective reporting. WASHINGTON ALWAYS HAS THE HIGHEST PRICES.
Over the last five years, Seattle regular gas has typically run about $0.70–$1.30 per gallon above the U.S. average, with the gap generally widening after 2022. Recent 2025–2026 readings are closer to $1.20–$1.30.
Approximate annual EIA regular-grade averages (Seattle monthly average vs. U.S. annual):
YearSeattle (approx.)U.S. averageSeattle above U.S.
2021$3.69$3.01+$0.68
2022$4.74$3.95+$0.79
2023$4.63$3.52+$1.11
2024$4.29$3.30+$0.99
2025$4.34$3.10+$1.25
2026 YTD (Jan–Aug)$5.04$3.75+$1.30
Washington state as a whole is usually among the three most expensive states, and Seattle sits at the high end of the state.
drivers of the difference include Washington’s high fuel taxes and climate/carbon fees, limits to refining and pipeline connections, higher transportation and operating costs, and local market conditions.
Personal opinion. We all want clean water and air. This is not about that. This is a political problem. This is like crime. This is about choices by politicians who pander and spend billions on poorly designed and thought-out programs that sound good but are not worth the cost. For some reason we are following in the footsteps of Europe and California on energy, environmental and other issues. Not exactly winners in those areas.
If you want an example, look at our state’s Ecology-promoted Climate Commitment Act (CCA) established with the worthy aim of reducing greenhouse gases, a goal no one can argue against. With $9 million dollars spent their initial report claimed a greenhouse gas reduction of 7.5 million (with an M) tons. After an audit, this was corrected down dramatically to a reduction of only 78,000 tons… which is basically not much. $$ well spent? Dept of Ecology’s larger investment of $386 million was initially promoted to reduce green house gases by 8.6 million tons, and this is continually being revised downward to 1.2 million tons AND some putting it at 308,000 tons. Ridiculous.
Greenhouse gas/CO2 reductions are complex problems from. Greenhouse gas/CO2 emissions from all sources have fallen 20% since 2005, energy-related are down 40%. This is due mainly to improved technology. This reduction is seen broadly without a significant difference in highly regulated states vs. those with less regulation. So, in states like WA where state agencies claim success in reducing green house gases it is hard to know what their impact truly is… but it seems minimal and not worth the $.
Duh. The crime, drugs, mental illness and graffiti that plague Seattle are a choice make by ignorant politicians. It could be cleaned up. A choice. When you vote for silver spoon in the mouth mayor, with naive socialist ideas, who has essentially never had a job, you get what you vote for.
@Softykjr Back maybe, bad yes. This team is painful to watch. Can't hit. Bad in the field. Don't seem to care. Our outfielders, except Julio, are so slow and unathletic. How many balls drop in front of them.
@Knarleygager420@KING5Seattle Who actually voted for these idiots? Can we make an IQ > 70 required to be on council?? A tip of the iceberg in terms of irresponsible unaccountable spending and stupid ideas.
