MERZ: For four and a half years, Ukraine has been fighting for its survival, and no one — yes, no one — has threatened Russia...
[AfD shouting and interrupting Merz]
Let me say this again now, quite calmly. We support Ukraine, and we will continue to support Ukraine.
Because they are also defending our freedom, even here in the middle of our European continent.
And your [AfD] reactions only show that you clearly intend to continue this downright grotesque reversal of perpetrator and victim.
No one has threatened Russia. Not NATO, not European Union, not Germany. And your [AfD] reactions show exactly how you think.
Ladies and gentlemen, the only thing that truly threatens Russia and Putin is the radiance of democracy.
Ukraine was on its way into European democratic family, and that is precisely the real danger to Putin’s regime in Russia.
And you in AfD know that, yet you remain unchanged on Russia’s side when it comes to defending our freedom here as well.
Finally watched the Odyssey and boy what a let down. But I should have known better. This was after all a Nolan movie. BTW, anything going on in #bcpoli? My ★ review of The Odyssey (2026) on @letterboxd: https://t.co/zLZbLD1Xnx)
@David_Moscrop Civ 7 is to the franchise what Ishtar is to movies: an expensive piece of crap, incapable of being saved by even the best editing. It likely killed the game forever.
@Geosophyy Italy as one of the Top 5 countries in Europe? Excuse me! Germany with 83-plus million people, the third-largest economy in the world, which just happens to be twice the size of Italy's, and a top financial contributor to international organizations makes the Top 5 by default.
#OTD American director Paul Thomas Anderson celebrates his 56th birthday as one of the greatest living directors, perhaps even as the true heir of Stanley Kubrick. To celebrate, this is the sizzle reel from a course on PTA's film, which the College of Canyon offered.
@Colby_List hi Colby Wolfgang Depner, reporter, Canadian Press. Might you be available for a quick interview this morning about tonight's game? Best, W
#bcpoli@RobShaw_BC New: The Return Rob's Water Bottle To His Desk Act has passed all three readings and received royal assent in the legislature Tuesday morning #thankyouagain
Breaking my boycott, because I wonder if Seinfeld's library cop, played by the late great Philip Baker Hall, also a regular player for Robert Altman and Paul Thomas Anderson, was on the case here. "Well, I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over." https://t.co/kp0fDCpm3A
George Washington once borrowed The Law of Nations from the New York Society Library and never returned it. In 2010, the library’s head librarian joked that they weren’t planning to pursue overdue fines—but would still appreciate getting the book back. About a month later, it was returned by the Mount Vernon estate, 221 years late.
On Valentine’s Day 36 years ago, at the request of Carl Sagan, NASA turned Voyager 1's camera back toward home for one last look.
From 3.7 billion miles away, it captured this: a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
Here is how Carl Sagan beautifully described it:
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor, and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
Breaking my Twitter boycott again here, but anyone complaining about Canada supporting Ukraine with cash against Russia needs to think about on which side of this existential conflict for western democracy and global security they stand.
I have refused to post on this site because of you-know-who but I am breaking this rule now because this World Cup draw ceremony deserves comment with just one word - Perverse
A personal note. Today was my last day @BlackPressMedia after nearly 2 decades spread over 2 terms company has helped me grow as a journalist and a person; off to new adventures and challenges with Canadian Press but still covering the #bcpoli legislature
