@ZaidJilani In short: US said auto assembly in Canada will be over. Canadian official heard US officials loud and clear.
But the Ontario auto sector: 100,000 direct jobs, many more indirect. Canada wasn't about to just let that whole sector be dismantled over the next three years.
@nspector4@nytimes For consideration, Steve Bannon's mindset: “He’s driving deep. Remember, our strategy—I say it every day—is maximalist, a maximalist strategy. You have to take it however deep you can take it and, quite frankly, until you meet resistance. And we haven’t met any resistance.”
@jbsteinberg "Risk management comes at a price, but that cost of strategic autonomy, of sovereignty, can also be shared. Collective investments in resilience are cheaper than everyone building their own fortresses. Shared standards reduce fragmentations. Complementarities are positive sum."
@DerekJGrossman Carney, Jan. 26: "within three years, this agreement will drive considerable new Chinese joint-venture investment in Canada with trusted partners to protect and create new auto manufacturing careers for Canadian workers, and ensure a robust build-out of Canada’s EV supply chain."
