@MelJStride So wot is the money grabbing second home owners double council tax? Many Local communities and independent small business are suffering as second home owners no longer have the money to spend in the local economy
Earlier this week, Morgen Bailey (a keen supporter of indie authors) spent some time chatting about influences, the writing process, editing and what's coming up - and that conversation is available here if you're interested...

@ThisCoast (3) There has already been a massive impact on some areas due to the second home owners double tax with visitor numbers down, less people spending money locally, investors pulling out or putting developments on hold, properties on the market not selling (continued)
Even more local councils are now set to to extort funds from second home owners.
There is no justification for this tax. Second home owners are less of a burden on local services & logically should receive a discount on their council tax bill, as used to be the case.
Try the deputy leader of @northyorksc who has TWO properties which could be used to ease the housing stock. Ah, but they're holiday lets in the pretty seaside town of Staithes...
Are you a second home owner in the UK who rents out their property and pays business rates rather than council tax? Keen to speak to you for @theipaper. Please DM me or drop me a line [email protected]
I'm not one for New Year's resolutions or any of that, but if I may be bold enough to make a suggestion, read a book, preferably a novel, for just five minutes every night before bed. We know via scientific brainwave studies that it will improve your mental health and give you more empathy.
My wish for you all: May 2026 be your best year yet. 💙
virginia woolf's 1931 new years resolutions: “to have none. not to be tied. to be free & kindly with myself. sometimes to read, sometimes not to read. to go out, yes—but stay at home in spite of being asked. as for clothes, i think to buy good ones”
@BBCr4today It's all part of the dumbing down of the programme.
Please bring back the strong news agenda and tight presentation.
Is this really what R4 listeners want? I suspect not as this is not what's expected of the station that used to say "everyone needs a place to think".
“Parents will take bullets for their children… I don't think that's reflected sufficiently in the state.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting says healthcare for children hasn't been given the 'priority it deserves', in an interview for the start of the Today's Babies series.
@BBCr4today As if it will be accurate - you've given each families names they will get VIP treatment at every appointment they attend, this is banality nothing to do with being a so called flagship news programme.
