Remember, remember! The fifth of November.

Tonight is Guy Fawkes Night in Britain, where we commemorate the foiling of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot.

The plot was led by Catholic conspirators who were unhappy with the rule of King James I.

Their plan was to blow up the House of Lords, kill King James in the process, and start a popular revolt.

Famously, one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was caught in the act in the cellars beneath Parliament.

Fawkes was subsequently tried, found guilty, and then hung, drawn, and quartered.

To celebrate the foiling of the plot, bonfires were lit across London and an annual church thanksgiving service was put in place.

This later morphed into the more secular affair we see today, with families all across Britain coming together to light bonfires, set off fireworks, and enjoy toffee apples.

I was a child, and later a teenager, when you were prime minister. I watched you flood the country with millions of foreigners, further exacerbating my demographic insecurity. The precedent you set would later be turbocharged by the Liberal Party.

You sold Canadian gold mining rights to Chinese interests, failed to defend the gun rights of Canadians, and expanded the surveillance state, which the Liberals would later exploit. Meanwhile, the Canadian Armed Forces continued to rot under your watch.

You will not be remembered fondly. The nostalgia surrounding your government comes largely from older Canadians who enjoyed better jobs, affordable housing, and manageable mortgages during your tenure. They look back through rose tinted glasses at a country that was already deteriorating under your leadership.

The only conservatism you conserved was the liberalism of Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Your legacy is one of failure, and your time as prime minister will eventually fade into irrelevance.
