When I heard that Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis was going to come out the week before I released the first episode of Metropolis, I was really worried that it was going to suck all the air out of the Me*opolis room before I got there.

Granted - I'm not sure if having the rail be 'knowledge of CSS' is the ideal thing for having a good design eye, but it's better than nothing. Plus - less complexity in the implementation means better tooling for the pareto cases.

It's been fascinating digging into the most recent version of Squarespace. Some really tight constraints on what you can do with the design without dropping into CSS. For example, it's difficult to use more than two typefaces – they establish strong rails for that.

And it makes sense. Sqaurespace wants sites built on Squarespace to look good. Design rails are just like implementation rails - you're mostly keeping people from hurting themselves when they're not ready to go over the rail.
