The enigies are part of the benin ancient political structure, each enogie act as the representative or ambassador of the oba in a village or dukedom. They all act under the goodwill of the oba who has every right to install or derobe erring enigies. The enogieship are not the only edo leadership structure in the village level ~ Benin also pratice the use of odionwereship, Okao, paramount chiefs and ohen structure, but in all of these, every community is expected to have an odionwere.
Obaseki addressing the enigies as traditional rulers in edo south, was already an affront to undermine the authorities of the oba over this structure and based on the 1979 bendel edict, still applicable to edo and delta the oba of benin is the only traditional ruler in the 3 now seven LGA, in Edo south [pic1] and every other titles and traditional body are under him, the sole head of the BENIN TRADITIONAL COUNCIL.
The enigies are recognized in this edict as traditional chiefs under the control of the oba of benin the head of the BTC (Pic2). And during the reign of Oba Akenzua ll when Nigeria was still under the British control Oba Akenzua ll was the only personage using HRH the enigie never go by that title until the reign of Oba Erediauwa.
The enogie in contrast of what obaseki said have a body, the body is headed by a chairman whose appointed by the Oba of benin to lead other enigies during important meetings, Enogie of Siluko was the previous head before the enogie of egbaen was selected by the oba to head the council.
In contrast to Obaseki take Benin has only one traditional council which is BTC the moment other traditional council is created like Egor Traditional Council, Orhiomwon Traditional Council~~ Benin as kingdom has already been divided on papers, and the word Benin would be an umbrella name for a divided people.
