Most of my friends here read constantly as a child as I did. But think of your circle of friends. How many read anything beyond what was required or even just one or two extra books a year?

I lament this trend and see it to some extent in my own children and students. But it has to be balanced against the VAST EXPANSION of higher literacy and education in the 20th century in the developed world. Our baseline here is very high indeed by historical standards.
