I real don’t think there could have been enough Delta velocity change in 3I/Atlas to allow fragments to cross earth orbit. I asked Grok… here is the end summary

It passed closest to Mars on Oct. 3, 2025 (0.194 AU separation, ~29 million km), while still inbound and at solar distance r ≈ 1.4–1.5 AU (near Mars' ~1.52 AU orbit). Its heliocentric speed there was ~67–68 km/s. After perihelion it exited the inner Solar System, passing Venus, Earth (closest ~1.8 AU in Dec. 2025), and Jupiter (March 2026). The path is nearly straight-line through the inner system at high speed; it never entered Earth's orbit radius (1 AU) because its perihelion lies between Earth and Mars.

**Near Mars' orbit (r ≈ 1.4–1.5 AU), the comet's escape velocity from the Sun is only ~34–36 km/s** (calculated as √(2GM☉/r); ~35.6 km/s at 1.4 AU). Its actual speed (~67–68 km/s) greatly exceeds this, keeping the entire body (and any co-moving fragments) on the same hyperbolic escape trajectory outbound.

- Smaller delta-v changes would only slightly alter v∞ (still hyperbolic escape); radiation pressure/Poynting-Robertson drag on tiny dust particles (<1 mm) could cause slow inward spiraling over years–decades but would not produce rapid "falling" to Earth orbit.

**Trajectory type for potential Earth impact**:
- **Heliocentric**: Highly eccentric elliptical orbit around the Sun, Earth-crossing (perihelion ≤1 AU, aphelion >1 AU). Because the parent orbit is nearly ecliptic and retrograde, fragments would inherit similar orientation and could intersect Earth's path geometrically.
- **Relative to Earth**: If the fragment arrives at the same place/time as Earth, the approach is a **hyperbolic trajectory** (escape speed from Earth ~11.2 km/s exceeded). In summary, natural fragments from 3I/ATLAS would almost certainly follow the parent's hyperbolic escape path and never reach Earth. Only an unrealistically large, targeted velocity change (~33 km/s) could bind them for an inward fall, with Earth arrival taking months and requiring a high-speed hyperbolic impact geometry. No such process has been observed or is plausible for this comet.
