When it comes to accommodations for multilingual learners, accommodating assignments is most effective when the instruction itself has also been infused with accommodations (comprehensible input) & sprinkled with opportunities for low stress output.

It is VITAL that we protect the languages students join our classrooms knowing, hearing, understanding, speaking. These are leverages to acquiring English or other languages.

Ignoring languages not only limits students’ participation but also endangers their confidence & identity increasing language loss.

Linguistic oppression has devastating consequences.

#1 Hypothetical: upper Elementary student who was underschooled between Covid and the journey to get to the States. He has no reading or writing literacy in his home language. Does not hold on to sounds and does not apply them to reading. He has now been here a year. Should we?
