As we journey through life, time acquaints us—sometimes gently, often cruelly—with the inevitability of loss. The departure of loved ones etches itself into our souls, and though we may learn to endure, the weight of grief never truly lightens. Yet, in its relentless presence, death compels us to meet its gaze, to reckon with the fragile impermanence of all we hold dear.

Just three weeks ago, my father-in-law, Tom, bid farewell to this world. His passing was neither sudden nor unanticipated—he stood but three hours shy of his ninety-fifth birthday, a milestone he had approached with the serenity of a man who had lived fully and loved deeply. His family, a source of unwavering devotion, surrounded him as he crossed that threshold. Yet, even as we braced ourselves for that inevitable goodbye, we were wholly unprepared for the swift and staggering loss of another—his son, my brother-in-law, Tommy.

There are many things one might say about me, but to claim that I am devout would be a stretch. And yet, I hold steadfastly to the belief in a Creator, in a force beyond ourselves. Religion, for all its critics, has been a blessing. Those who find fault in faith often mistake the frailty of its followers for the failure of its tenets. But the essence of belief—the philosophy that seeks to guide and uplift—is not to blame for the shortcomings of those who struggle to embody it.
Tom and Tommy both lived as men of faith. They believed in a loving God, one who would one day weigh their deeds with mercy and grace. In their final moments, that belief carried them, lending them peace as they approached eternity. And so, I pray—as they once prayed—that their faith was well placed, that they now dwell in the presence of the divine, embraced by the loving Creator of the universe they trusted would receive them on their final earthly day. Amen.
