"My house fucking poisoned us

Well I didn’t expect to be writing this update from a hospital bed.
Shaking, feverish, struggling to breathe, and coughing so violently I can barely hold my phone. But the worst part? None of this needed to happen.

We’ve been living in a rental house that has been silently poisoning us for over a year.

The issues started from day one. There was a leak. Visible damage. We were told it was just a builder’s warranty issue and it would be fixed soon. So we trusted the process. We didn’t push. We tried to be understanding. Plus how the hell do we find another one if we get pushy and the lease doesn’t get renewed?

But it never got fixed. The leak worsened. In the cyclone rain dump, $13,000 worth of our belongings were destroyed. I claimed it through insurance and kept going, still trusting they’d do the right thing.

Then in April, I found mushrooms growing out of the wall. That’s how bad the moisture and mould had become. We immediately abandoned two of the three bedrooms and started sleeping all together in one room—myself, my husband, our four-year-old son, and our newborn daughter.

I’ve spent most of my daughter’s life—her first four months—caring for her with a racking, room-spinning cough. Breathless. Dizzy. Sick. But it kept getting worse.
I begged the real estate for help. For alternative accommodation. For relocation assistance. I sent email after email explaining our health issues and the unlivable state of the home.

The owner refused.

I asked for an air purifier. He said he’d send one.
It never came.

Eventually, after relentless pressure, the real estate sent out a mould inspection team. And the moment they pulled the carpet back and disturbed the area, my health collapsed completely. Within days I was spiralling—coughing nonstop, feverish, barely able to function.

Builders returned and saw how sick we were. When they questioned our living situation and understood we were spending our nights all in one bed, none of us getting any decent sleep, he changed his plans and prioritised our house for repair. He was horrified.

They had to rip out the entire floor and wall. That’s when I got REALLY sick. The front of the house is covered with scaffolding. No entry to the garage or driveway. And today, when I didn’t make it home from the hospital, my husband called to let me know the builders had told him the damage extended to the entire front of the house and another room needs to be done.

When my 4 month old began coughing, I immediately legged it to the hospital to have both of us checked. She has gone home with an upper respiratory tract infection. Back to that fucking shit house.

I didn’t get to leave - I’ve been admitted. Now I’m here. On a fucking oxygen mask. Away from my baby. Too sick to care for my children. And I’m done being quiet.

I came here for advice and got the normal stuff. Contact REIQ. QCAT I did breach them, however trying to navigate it all when I’ve been this fucking sick hasn’t been possible.

This isn’t just mould. This is negligence. This is what happens when landlords and property managers ignore dangerous defects, gamble with people’s health, and hope tenants will just “put up with it.”

We didn’t just lose rooms. We lost time. We lost safety. And I lost my health.

This ends now.

Legal action is coming. Accountability is coming.

And if you’re a renter in Queensland—don’t let them do this to you. Learn your rights. Push back. Make noise.
Because I will not let my family’s suffering be quietly swept under a rotten carpet.

EDIT TO ADD: The hospital have just given me a letter to give to the real estate (as well as keep as evidence) that I’m ill from the exposure and should not return. Also explains I will now need ongoing treatment."
