Universal Pictures creó páginas web, noticias de periódicos falsas e informes del FBI inventados para simular que el caso era verídico y así, crear una potente campaña de marketing. Debido a esto, el sindicato de prensa de Alaska y el propio ayuntamiento de Nome protestaron y obligando al estudio a pagar una compensación por difundir noticias falsas.

La única base real de la película es el escenario: la ciudad de Nome, Alaska. En este remoto lugar sí se registró un número inusualmente alto de desapariciones durante décadas. Sin embargo, una investigación oficial del FBI determinó que la causa real de estas desapariciones se debió a una combinación de alcoholismo y clima extremo.
