THE WHITE HART AND THE YEW
"Insights can come from random places.
Lately I have been reading about Yggdrasil, the world tree from Norse mythology. There is a whole load of symbolism wrapped up in the traditional descriptions of Yggdrasil – one fascinating detail is that there are four stags that nibble at its low-hanging branches, and as they do so, lifting their heads tilts their antlers back and downward-pointing over their shoulders. Dew dropping from the tree’s foliage runs down the antlers of the four stags and drips to the ground – and this is the source of all the streams, springs, and rivers of Middle Earth, our world.
There is some debate as to whether Yggdrasil is a great Ash tree or a great Yew tree – it is known as the ‘evergreen Ash’ but Ash trees are not evergreens. Personally, I like the idea of it being a Yew tree as the Yew is so sacred (as the Winter Solstice rebirth tree, and conclusion tree of the Ogham). Yews live longest in the tree world; they can live for many thousands of years. That said, Ash is very special too (and in the Ogham it holds the Spring Equinox position). Yew holds the rebirth of the sun and thus the beginning of a new Solar Year, Ash at Spring Equinox holds the beginning of a new Agricultural Year – maybe it depended upon which moment in the year was more important to each tribe?
The five guardian trees of ancient Ireland were three Ash trees (in county Meath) and two Yew trees (in county Leinster) – so both Ash and Yew were venerated as especially important across northern Europe.
Anyway, pondering the four stags nibbling Yggdrasil - Yew is extremely toxic, so would deer actually consume Yew tree foliage?
It turns out, yes, rather surprisingly, some species of deer can eat Yew foliage and Yew arils (its red fruit). Deer have digestive systems that can pass away the toxic seeds of the Yew fruit – as reindeer can happily munch Fly Agaric mushrooms. Grey Squirrels, Badgers, Fox, and many birds can also feed on the fruit of the Yew tree. So too can humans eat the red flesh of Yew arils – BUT NOT THE STONE-SEED-PIP which is highly toxic.
I thought this was very interesting as both the White Hart and the Yew belong to each other as representing midwinter symbolism – and they are symbiont, or rather, the totem animal of the Winter Solstice can survive through the winter on the fruit and foliage of the Winter Solstice tree."
