Man @EricShahzar really offended my sense of cliche with that ending. I mean really? Was this a high school project? Let me tell you why this opinion piece came out and why Al-Jazeera has recently started becoming critical of Pakistan.
Qatar has always prided itself as irreplaceable by being the router for diplomacy. Wanna talk to Iranians? Talk to Doha. Wanna talk to Hamas? Talk to Doha. Wanna talk to Taliban talk to Doha. If you were involved in the Middle East Qatar was indispensable to advancing your goals whether lawful or nefarious. Qatar augmented this positioning brilliantly with influence via Al-Jazeera a news juggernaut critical of everyone except well Qatar. Finally Qatar hosted the largest US base. It thought this trinity of initiatives would make it untouchable.
Then 2025 happened. First Iran did a symbolic strike. Then Israel hit the heart of Doha killing a Qatari. Every time a Pakistani citizen has been killed in a strike by someone in our region Pakistan has hit back harder. India. Iran. Afghanistan. We don’t spare you. Qatar stunned could do nothing. Its entire hypothesis of its own invulnerability and indeed its own relevance came tumbling down. In the end meekly realising that indeed “power is power” it allowed the death of its citizen to go unpunished and did a defense pact with the US.
One reason the US allowed this strike was because Qatar had overplayed its hand by over negotiating its perceived leverage. Pakistans faced the same when renegotiating LNG. Nuisance back and forth. Unrealistic freight charges. Hubris in every email.
You see May 2025 had changed everything. Pakistan after destroying India in the air had come out as a global top 5 military player. It was suddenly a piece on the chessboard. A knight. Asymmetrical. Deadly. Trump saw an opportunity. Why deal with Qatar whose entire influence was phone calls and money, and why not deal with someone who could project power? So when Gaza deal happened it was Pakistan who spoke. When a peacekeeping force was needed it was Pakistan who was asked.
In just months Pakistan has started to subsume Qatar’s decades old carefully constructed role in the Middle East. There’s a new enforcer in the Middle East. There’s another player on whom Qatar barely has any influence.
Hence this opinion piece and the sundial crawl change of tone by Al Jazeera on Pakistan. Pakistan has gained at Qatar’s expense and a nation which because of the accident of hydrocarbons thought it superior to us now sits stung by our ascent.
Bonus: Here’s a picture of Pakistani PM telling Qatari Emir how to win.

In 2014, a brave 15-year-old student in Pakistan spotted an individual wearing a suspicious vest attempting to enter his school.
Ignoring his friends' pleas to flee, the courageous teenager chose to face the intruder. In a selfless act, he tackled the individual, triggering the vest's explosion and sacrificing his life in the process.
This heroic action averted a potential tragedy, saving the lives of countless fellow students.
Following his death, his father said, "My son made his mother cry but saved hundreds of mothers from crying for their children."
I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have lead to to the death and destruction of so many, and so much. Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions. I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision. While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!

CNN's Nick Robertson reports that India reached out to the US, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for assistance in halting the conflict after Pakistan unexpectedly launched a relentless and massive missile barrage into Indian military installations.
Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.
I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.
We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.

When Argentina lifted their first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1978, a remarkable Pakistani born in Bhopal left his indelible mark by helping the Argentines win the trophy. On the anniversary of Leo Messi and Argentina's World Cup victory, looking back at this incredible story.

I am deeply concerned about clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in the Middle East.
The protection of civilians must be paramount.
They are #NotATarget.
Nobody is above international humanitarian law.
