I'm finding this a hard read. Like most 'trade books' it lacks analytical depth but the research and newshound fine-detail description are superb. The individual Tech Bros in the narrative are genuinely scary.

I've met a good few of them. They're basically drugged-up idiots savants - quite clever at maths and language but not clever enough to be conceptual mathematicians or writers. They're impulsive, superficial, fast-talking puzzle-solvers - think chess, crosswords, IQ/Mensa tests etc. - but severely lacking in every other dimension - connective conceptual sophistication, ethics, wisdom, true realism, history, social sense, empathy, emotional intelligence and so on.

They've populated the top tier of the banking industry for centuries but become spectacularly influential each time there's a tech revolution, mainly because they provide consumers with convenience gadgets and we all think they're "dead clever". The industrialists were slightly different because they had a grasp of reality and some - a few! - had a morsel of social obligation. Not this lot.

China is succeeding because its experienced politicians confine them to their specialisms and keep them out of the corridors of power and the circuits of cultural influence. We need to do the same, after which we can start communicating and organising some serious politics. https://t.co/N8xUft6vPV

Suppose a biological philosopher announced that Jews were innately inferior, intellectually deficient, disproportionately troublesome and that a genuinely meritocratic society would therefore contain far fewer of them in prestigious positions.

It doesn’t have to be 1933. We can do this little thought experiment right here in 2026.

Would you really pop up underneath it to explain that we “can’t just call people we don’t know or understand antisemitic because they seem to disagree with us”?

Of course you wouldn’t, because antisemitic would not be a playground insult in that situation. It would be a description of the argument.

That is the sleight of hand here. Nobody is calling Cofnas racist because he prefers a different marginal tax rate or thinks Cambridge should change its parking policy. He has spent years advancing claims about racial groups, inherited intelligence, merit and the supposed overrepresentation or underrepresentation of particular populations in elite institutions. You can dispute whether those claims are true. You can debate his methodology until Cambridge sinks into the Fens. What you cannot sensibly do is pretend that describing this body of thought as racist amounts to adults becoming incapable of tolerating disagreement.

And history is rather inconvenient for this twee little etiquette lesson. Abolition was not achieved because everybody eventually used their indoor voices. American slavery survived argument, compromise and accommodation until it culminated in civil war. European antisemitism was not simply an unfortunate disagreement between people who needed to understand one another better. Once racial hierarchy acquired state power, removing it required catastrophic force.

The lesson is not that every racist deserves a bayonet.

The lesson is that “disagreement” is morally empty language unless you tell us what the disagreement is about.

Sometimes the disagreement is whether Black people and Jews are fundamentally equal to everyone else.

At that point, Alexander, people are perfectly entitled to start using nouns.

I think we can safely say the culture of the United States has demonstrably changed from its post-war norms. Since Trump began his 2016 presidential campaign, I completed junior high, high school, undergrad, a masters program, and got married. This isn’t some sort of blip. He was elected twice — the second time with Americans’ eyes more than wide open.
