It’s much simpler than that.

This is not about “football bringing us together.”
It is not about “winning together tastes better.”
It is not about “division making us all weaker.”
It is not about any of those empty words, slogans and catchphrases.

It is not even about giving substance to our own — now equally hollow — motto, “More than a Club,” nor about how Barça fans may feel one way or another.

It is simply about avoiding a moment of tension by cancelling an event that would undoubtedly have been deeply unsatisfactory for some and entirely unnecessary for others. There is no need to hold it, and there is absolutely nothing to be gained from doing so.

It really is that simple. From there, of course, everyone is free to pile as many political or moral layers onto the decision as they like. But the event simply will not take place because, once again, the utterly savage behaviour of the Spanish police has put the whole thing under an enormous spotlight.

Not to forget: Without the beating of that kid, the event would have gone ahead, flying under the radar and in a comfortable, low-profile manner. Some people would have felt satisfied and proud, others — myself included — would have felt uncomfortable, and then everyone would have moved on, as we all always do.

In fact, the political message (if any, and if we're playing that game) is "stop beating our kids and us catalans we'll be perfectly comfortable", which is indeed a quite sad position, to be honest.
