I am so grateful to have the opportunity to complete my medical training here, but that doesn’t erase the fact that so much more could be done to make medical education affordable and accessible for people from all backgrounds, not just positions of privilege. 7/7
However, this province has done NOTHING to entice me to stay, and is walking past their own graduates to recruit in other countries. I left nursing to further my education as I saw the need for physicians who love Newfoundland and want to live and work here. 5/7
Factor in the skyrocketing cost of living here, the amount of debt I will graduate with is astronomical. I have contacted my MHA and the Department of Education to no avail. I am from here, so is my husband who has an established career, and we do not want to leave 4/7
Furthermore, I cannot get any government student aid to assist me to pay my tuition because I’m married (my husbands salary is apparently expected to cover all of our household expenses, mortgage, vehicles etc… plus my tuition). 3/7
I’m almost halfway through medical school and not once has our government made any effort to recruit us or talk to us regarding what options exist to work here (while other provinces have done multiple presentations). 2/7
While there is nothing wrong with attempts to recruit physicians from other countries, why doesn’t our government also start recruitment efforts at home? This is not a problem thats going to go away and the demand for physicians certainly isn’t going to decrease. 1/7
@rebeccatizzard Well said! Absolutely ridiculous the lack of support and lack of intention on behalf of government who could help and ease the burden in so many ways.
Tis the season!!
