Our government is supposed to be of the people, for the people, and by the people.
When Lincoln spoke those words there was one congressperson for every 122k persons. Now it is over 760k.
How can it be for us if it never grows along with us?
It wasn't meant to be this way.
With all of the discussion surrounding redistricting/gerrymandering in the US right now, I felt motivated to start a new project to answer the question "What if American districts were drawn with the same rules* as Canadian ridings?"
So I drew them, starting with Alabama. 🧵
We are a big country with technology and many different people. This would be better.
35 million dollar primaries would be much harder and less impact full when the District size is 100,000 instead of 800k+
Everything is going great and we should never rethink how our government is structured.
250 years ago the founders thought about how it was structured. Later, the framers wrote it down.
Did they intend a stagnated House size? A duopoly? 35 million dollar primaries?
No.
"Big Board Items Scuttled Due to Surprise Supe Absences"
Our systems of government are built around too few powerful people. The county reforms should look at adding supervisors and supporting federal representation by adding representation.

Two reminders.
We should have hundreds of more representatives in the U.S. House instead of fighting over the arbitrary 435 we have had since 1911.
The King of the Country we declared independence from 250 years ago was just here. His country has more representation now.
This is the most thinly veiled power grab ever. When I lived in this supervisors district they never once responded to my inquiries. They sent me plenty of election text messages and invites to "town halls"....but only in election years. https://t.co/TJzqmUHNRS
This artice says, "With elements of the package still being changed, Lawson-Remer has long stressed that a citizen-led task force will advise supervisors on how a new charter gets implemented."
https://t.co/m1khmy1a8s
Who is on this task force, is it public, how is it formed?
reminder that the IRS built a direct file program because doing your taxes should be free and easy, and then Trump and Republicans killed the program as a favor to TurboTax
This may sound like a sponsored post but I promise it's not (I just hate TurboTax and their rent-seeking lobbyists with the passion of a thousand suns):
Use FreeTaxUSA instead. It's >90% cheaper than TurboTax and easier to use/higher quality software.
Our problems have solutions. They aren't easy soundbites. They require those with power to share it, or they require the majority of the country to stop fighting duopoly team politics to find ours. It would start by systemic change to our representation and debate abilities.
The SAVE Act is just another example of the truth. Many politicians distain us. They put up roadblocks to make it difficult to exist, retaining power and money. IDs are not free.
It's the same reason their donators at @turbotax keep taxe filing from being simple and free.
When you realize the power isn't with you, it is with the donation class that sees you as a product. As a cog in the wheel to make monthly payments, the system is alot more depressing.
The SAVE Act is just another thinly veiled and cynical power grab based on no data and fear.
How many people involved have run for multiple districts. Issa, 2. Jacobs, 2. 4x candidate, at least 2.
Congress shouldn't be so profitable carpetbaggers can move all over. Have any of the millionaire candidates even been to their districts?
Desmond knows where he lives!
This is the 2nd time Issa retires from Congress. In 2018 Issa did not seek re-election at end of 9th term in office. Issa then ran in 2020 against indicted incumbent Duncan D Hunter & won 2 re-elections.
Career politician wanting to have power and not be accountable to consitutents. Don't fall for the @SupLawsonRemer scam. Demand better.

See, @SupLawsonRemer can change the leg program when it benefits her political ambitions and points.
Doesn't care about community representation in the federal government though. https://t.co/f1IdY3tmLP
"San Diego County deserves a governance structure equal to its size, its responsibilities, and the expectations of its residents."
Why not consider bigger changes. Why is there the same number of reps there were in 1850? LA County approved an increase.
