What issues facing SSF do you want to see discussed at #WFC24
@SSFHub Greater emphasis on small-scale vessel safety would be good, as 100,000+ fishing related deaths occur each year. Be great to meet lots of @SSFHub folks at my #WFC2024 talk on ‘Enacting the new UK Code of Practice for small fishing vessels’ (Tues 5th, Beckler 302).
@TalesofTurley@IPNLF Agreed! Also, traditional f/v designs derive from experiential knowledge and are tailored to local fishery/weather/boatbuilding, but climate change is upsetting this balance. Older boats must now fish harder and further offshore, so should be climate-proofed to ensure safety.
The International Fund for Fishing Safety, our grant-giving programme with @Seafarers_KGFS & @FISHplatform, has been mentioned in @TheManilaTimes. #Funding is available for organisations focused on reducing accidents and fatalities for fishers. Read now: https://t.co/ng03hUzFRP

We worked with @FAO to develop a series of 13 posters to raise awareness of essential safety at sea topics for small-scale fishers. Each week we share one with you. This week, Always Be Aware of Fatigue: #safetyatsea#fishing https://t.co/X0BAC82N1Z
When a 20 metre multi-hull boat capsized during the Isle of Wight boat race, @RNLI_Portsmouth volunteers raced to the rescue.
Three people had to be transferred to @BembridgeRNLI after feeling the effects of cold water immersion.
Well done everyone. 👏

Happy #InternationalFishermensDay!
Fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs. We thank all #fishers who risk so much to bring us seafood. At @Seafarers_KGFS, we're committed to promoting #FishingSafety & ensuring people can go to sea & return home safely👇

Barack Obama called out the disparity in news coverage between the missing Titan submersible, which received nearly wall-to-wall coverage this week, and a capsized boat carrying 700 migrants in the Mediterranean, which received barely any attention comparatively
Today, we’ve published our fatal accident report into how the skipper went overboard from the creel fishing vessel Harriet J (AH180) off south-east Scotland. The report reiterates the hazards of working on small, lone-operated boats.
