It's been a real joy working on Spaßbremse, and I've been so thankful for the opportunity to talk with and learn from some wonderful people :) Also taking a lil break from Twitter as I focus on finishing my degree and figuring out what to do next, but I'll be back!
The biggest financial crime happening in Winnipeg is that the cops just got an $8.3 million increase in city funding, bringing its total budget to $327 million in 2023. That money is stolen from libraries, transit, safe consumption sites, recreation, housing and so much more.
Shout out to the Millennium Library Community Working Group for years of shaping and fighting for $ for Community Connections and Community Safety Hosts.
The research is clear, community voices are united: we need to invest in care and community-led strategies if we want to address the organized abandonment of this (and decades of) budget(s).
The second lie is that there's nothing else we could do- that we have to accept that collateral damage of this budget, which makes people vulnerable by pushing them out of public spaces and limiting their options for keeping themselves safe.
This budget is based on 2 insidious lies: first, that securitization and police (in libraries, in transit, etc) make people safer. The research is clear that this is not true.
For more info about the important services carried out by public libraries, and what we risk losing if city council continues to ignore calls for more funding, please check out (and follow!) the great Winnipeg Library Facts page over on Instagram. https://t.co/UGGJugm2Fh
It’s been hard to be so far from Winnipeg the past few weeks, where a really important fight for municipal funding of public libraries has been taking place. (Thread)
This is where we worry over breaking news
This is where we read a hundred Nancy Drew's
This is where we're difficult and can't sit still
This is where we come in from the "feels like with the wind chill"
Here is a branch where we sing out the call
Millennium for all
@pegcityrunner@jbrowaty@B_MayesSTV@SherriLRollins Sherri’s post is in reference to a different delegate who spoke about “pornographic material” in the library (in a harmful, homophobic and transphobic way). Kirsten’s presentation (which Sherri also walked out on) was about the understaffing and underfunding of WPL.
This was upsetting to watch. My mother went to Winnipeg city hall to share her experience working as a librarian in an underfunded system & to talk about why putting cops in the library won’t solve community safety concerns. Three councillors walked out during her presentation.
Check out this thread for an overview of the delegations at today’s EPC meeting about the budget. You can also listen to some of the great contributions by folks from @Millennium4All (even if your city councillors won’t) over on YouTube: https://t.co/pvdjpg8f3h
